about

Working together since 2009 with albums on Home Normal, Sonic Pieces, and Dekorder, the latest collaboration between Gareth Davis (bass clarinet) and Machinefabriek (electronics) is released on White Paddy Mountain. Their latest album, ‘Shroud Lines’, edited from a two day recording recidency at Studio Loos, The Hague, has grown into the duo’s most fully formed album yet. Coming from improvised sessions, it negotiates the unpredictability of the organic and acoustic process as fragments of sound turn into rich textures and melodic lines. Perhaps more so than any of their previous work, the album is sequenced as a suite, chapters of new landscapes, saturated and intertwined with found sounds and field recordings which create the overall narrative whole.

profile

Gareth Davis

Gareth Davis plays clarinet(s), the result of a somewhat impulsive purchase whilst window shopping in Covent Garden, London, around ten years before the turn of the century. The serendipitous location of a rather wonderful (and equally important, rather cheap) second hand record shop less than 10m from the bus stop required for seven years of schooling, combined with delivering newspapers on a daily basis, lead to a somewhat eclectic, dusty and generally unclassified taste in music. The result, performances and recordings ranging from classical concerti, to newly written works by composers such as Bernhard Lang, Peter Ablinger, Toshio Hosokawa and Jonathan Harvey. Collaborations ranging from the vocal group Neue Vocalsolisten and the JACK string quartet to improvising musicians Frances-Marie Uitti and Elliott Sharp, experimental bands such as Oiseaux Tempete and Nadja and electronic artists Scanner, Merzbow and Machinefabriek.

Machinefabriek

Machinefabriek is the alias of Rutger Zuydervelt. Rutger’s music combines elements of ambient, noise, minimalism, drone, field recordings and electro-acoustic experiments. His pieces can be heard as an attempt to create sonic environments for the listener to dwell in. Finding tension in texture, tone and timing, the result can be very minimalistic at first glance, but reveals itself upon closer listening. The devil is in the details. After a series of self released cd-rs, his official debut Marijn was issued in 2006, with great critical acclaim. Since then a solid stream of music was released on labels such as Type, Important, Home Normal, 12K, Entr’acte, Dekorder, Digitalis, Experimedia and Staalplaat. He performed all over the globe, from Canada to Israel and from Russia to Japan.
Rutger collaborated (on record and/or live) with numerous artists, such as Steinbrüchel, Jaap Blonk, Aaron Martin, Peter Broderick, Frans de Waard, Steve Roden, Michel Banabila, Dead Neanderthals and Gareth Davis, amongst many others.
